Pasqual “Pat” Mercado

Pasqual “Pat” MercadoPasqual “Pat” Mercado, age 95 (28 days shy of his 96th birthday), passed away Saturday April 16, 2022 while residing with his daughter Cathy in Murrieta, CA. Pat was born on May 14, 1926 in Los Angeles, CA and lived in Ridgecrest, CA prior to Murrieta, CA.

Pat enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in November 1943 to April 1946. He was part of the 3rd Battalion, 28th Regiment of the 5th Marine Division that stormed the island of Iwo Jima. Pt was wounded on February 22, 1945, 4 days after landing on the island, by artillery or mortar shell. Pat spent 14 months in San Diego Naval Hospital undergoing multiple surgeries and reconstructive surgeries to his face.

Pat was married to Maggie Bermudez Mercado from Etiwanda, CA for 67 years, since February 4, 1951. They settled in China Lake, CA where he worked at the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station for 37 years as an Instrumentation Electronics Technician. They had four children: Danny Mercado who lives in Prescott, AZ and has four children, Matthew, Mario, Ashley and Nickolas; Mary Mercado who lives in Montclair, CA; David Mercado who lived in Alhambra, CA and Cathy Mercado who lives in Murrieta, CA with husband Kevin and have two children Ben and Colin.  After retiring, Pat enjoyed working in his garden, nurturing his vegetables, fruit trees, and rose bushes. He also enjoyed attending WWII Marine Corps Reunions and loved talking about his experience during his Battle of Iwo Jima. Those memories will live on with his family and friends. Pat will always be remembered as a very proud WWII Marine Corps. Veteran. Preceding him in death were his parents, Pilar and Juana Mercado; wife, Maggie Mercado; son, David Mercado; brothers, Robert and Popo Mercado; and sister, Hope Gayton.

Services were held on April 26, 2022 at St. Martha’s Catholic Church and interment at Riverside National Cemetery.
