Winners of DCOA Young Artist Auditions announcedThe Desert Community Orchestra Association

(DCOA) is happy to announce the winners of the recent Young Artist auditions. Those selected were Deanna Belt, flutist, and Geoffrey Brown, bass. These talented young musicians will be featured with the Desert Community Orchestra in their final concert of the season on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. at Joshua Hall, Desert Empire Fairgrounds. The orchestra, under the direction of Robert Martinez, will accompany the young musicians in their performance.

Deanna Belt, age 17, is the daughter of David and Penny Belt. She has been playing flute for seven years, in the middle school and now high school band, where she serves as flute section leader and band president. She also plays flute in the high school orchestra, plays keyboard in the jazz band, and sings in the choir. She has taken private flute lessons with Deb Veit for the last four years. She has participated in HDMTA recitals, solo and ensemble festivals, The Desert Pipers Flute Choir, and church services with flute solos and duets. Deanna also loves to sing and has been singing since before she can remember. She studied voice with Amber Peterson for four years and is now working with David Hodgson. She has been in several musicals with Ridgecrest Musical Enrichment Society (RMES) and recently played the lead role of Pamina in Mozart’s Magic Flute with the Ridgecrest Opera Workshop. In the May DCO concert, Deanna will be the flute soloist playing Flute Concerto No. 3 in D Major by Antonio Vivaldi.

Geoffrey Brown, 17 year old son of Yihfen Chen and Duane Brown, is no stranger to the local stage. With the RMES, he has performed in both junior and adult productions with memorable roles such as Jafar in Aladdin, the Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland, and Mush in Newsies. As his voice developed, Brown began performing for the Ridgecrest Opera Workshop organization as a bass soloist in concerts like Handel’s Messiah (Winter 2021 & Spring 2022) and full-scale operas such as Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro (2018). When COVID-19 hit in 2020, he took on the beloved and goofy Papageno in Mozart’s Magic Flute for a virtual, six-episode series as well as the in-person interpretation the following summer. Outside of musicals and operas, Brown also dances and practices various martial art forms such as Taekwando, Kung Fu, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He would like to thank his voice teacher of 7+ years, David Hodgson, for countless lessons preparing him for this classic aria; he would also like to extend gratitude to his piano instructor, Patrick Rindt, and various musical teachers (violin, viola, and guitar) for giving him a strong musical foundation. Geoffrey will be the bass soloist singing “Ha! wie will ich triumphieren”, Aria #19 from The Abduction From The Seraglio by Mozart.

The DCOA invites the community to all its concerts, and especially to the Young Artist Concert on May 14th highlighting these musically outstanding youth.
