Four officers from four different agencies were honored Friday night at the John Ward Annual Respect for Law Recognition Dinner held at the Kerr Mcgee Center. Recipients of the award were California Highway Patrolman Officer Jose Madrigal, Deputy Isaac Azua Kern County Sheriff, Officer Joseph Schatz China Lake Police and Officer Kyle Cushman of the Ridgecrest Police Department. These individuals were chosen by their peers to receive the prestigious award of Officer of the Year.

Congratulations along with certificates were awarded to each officer from their commanding officers as well as local service organizations and elected officials including Kern County District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer, CA State Assemblyman Vince Fong, representatives from the offices of Congressman Kevin McCarthy and Senator Shannon Grove. Each officer was praised for his character traits and qualities such as professionalism, bravery, selflessness, compassion, strong ethics, and a deep respect and knowledge of the law. The officers were honored for possessing the superior qualities that are essential for every cop in the profession today.

The Respect for Law Recognition Dinner began in 1995 with the Optimist Club of China Lake, through John Ward and several other service organizations. The dinner was designed to instill a sense of respect and responsibility to law and the enforcers of those laws. Ward chaired the event until 2009.

In 2010, the dinner was chaired by Forest Lloyd with the China Lake Rotary Club, then beginning in 2012 by Nickola Johnson with the Footprinters. It was decided that year to rename the dinner in honor of John Ward.

Congratulations to the officers who have embraced these challenges and shown themselves as heroes.
