To the Editor: A massive waste of your constituents’ money

According to the data page referenced by Cal Recycle  2018 Statewide Waste Characterization Study ( that Council members should have seen by now), there were 221,577 single family households in Kern County.  For these , the total food waste for the year was 47,584 tons.

At the weight of water  of 8 pounds per gallon( as heavy as any waste will get) that comes to 53 gallons a year of food waste per household.

At half that weight - 4 pounds per gallon ( the likely weight ) it comes to 107 gallons a year of food waste.

So, even though I was told by your consultant that there was no data as to yearly food waste generated per household, you can see it is easy to estimate.

The yearly waste per single family household  is at most 107 gallons.  That is barely 2 gallons a week.

Let’s take it up a notch and add in the “other” organics.   That brings the weekly gallons per household to 2.7, not a big difference.

The textiles comes in at 13,543 tons, almost all of which is not going into a trash can that we will pay WM to haul off..

The plant matter organic wastes ( grass, stumps “prunings”) totals 1.7 pounds a week per household.

So, why are you proposing to make us pay some unknown amount to haul off about 3 gallons of organic waste A WEEK.  Sounds like my estimate of 5 gallons per week at the last meeting was actually a little over.

I  would say that this is a massive waste of your constituents money. There is no doubt that it will cost us more, although we ware not being provided a possible cost along with the proposal of the ordinance.

We are facing being forced to pay more to accomplish very little, and no hint of allowing opt out provided.

If I were you, I would not be happy with this no choice mandate being proposed to be forced on every house in Ridgecrest.  And all being done along with the “partnership” of Waste Management. There is a term for that kind of governance.   I will wait until tomorrow to see if you can figure out what that is.
