McCarthy leads bipartisan effort to protect China Lake’s Admiral

Office of Congressman Kevin McCarthy – February 9

Today, Congressman McCarthy released the following statement after Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro confirmed to him that the U.S. Navy will be maintaining its flag officer billet (i.e. admiral level officer) with the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD) at China Lake. This follows a review of flag officer billets as required by the Fiscal Year 2017 National Defense Authorization Act. This decision comes shortly after McCarthy sent a letter to Vice Admiral Carl Chebi, Commander of the Naval Air Systems Command, urging the Navy to keep this billet at the installation. McCarthy then led a follow-up letter with Senator Feinstein, Senator Padilla, and Rep. Obernolte to Navy Secretary Del Toro in support of preserving NAWCWD’s flag officer at China Lake.

McCarthy released the following statement:

“The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division has made countless contributions to our national security, helping to test and develop some of our country’s most important technology. By maintaining a flag officer – the highest Navy rank classification – at NAWCWD, the Navy is signaling the critical role that China Lake plays in advancing our national interests and supporting those who are guarding our shores from threats abroad. This is further confirmed by the Navy’s substantial financial investments to develop the base over recent years, including the more than $3 billion in earthquake-related repairs and renovations. It’s important that Secretary Del Toro and Admiral Chebi understood the incredible contributions made by the men and women of China Lake, and I look forward to the base’s continued success.”
