1960 Burroughs Baseball Teammates

1960 Burroughs Baseball TeammatesBruce Auld, a former Sierra Sands Unified School District Superintendent, is writing the history of Burroughs High School. The articles that are being published are excerpts from his upcoming book, exclusive to The News Review. In last week’s article, I cited Dave Martin’s decision to decline the Cincinnati Reds’ offer of a “no bonus” minor league contract. Upon finishing the Martin family baseball story, I picked up a Bakersfield Californian, the Saturday, October 2 edition, and discovered by chance the following obituary:

Michael S. Baker 1942-2021

“Michael was born on August 18, 1942 to Jesse and Jewel Baker in Greensboro, Georgia. His dad being a career Marine, Mike moved many times during his childhood settling in China Lake, CA during his high school years. His love for baseball took him to Bakersfield College after graduating from Burroughs High in 1960. He played baseball at Bakersfield College and was signed with the LA Angels to play professional baseball. His love for this sport did not diminish even though his professional career with the Angels did not work out.”

Dave Martin and Mike Baker played football and baseball together at Burroughs. They graduated Burroughs together in 1960.
