DCO to perform ‘An American Salute’ Sept. 25

DCO to perform ‘An American Salute’ Sept. 25The Desert Community Orchestra opens up another concert season with its annual Pops Concert won Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 7:00 p.m.  This performance will be held at the Desert Empire Fairgrounds Open Stage for an outdoor early fall concert. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and donations are warmly appreciated. Please bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating. We request that the audience be responsibly masked for this event.

The concert theme is “An American Salute” and the orchestra will present an array of  music from some of the greatest American themes and patriotic songs. Standards such as “God Bless America” and “You’re A Grand Old Flag” will be played. Morton Gould’s “American Salute” which is based upon ``When Johnny Comes Marching Home” is a wonderful arrangement memorializing American Civil War history.

The World War II time period will be celebrated with “A Salute to The Big Bands”, a medley of the Big Band sounds such as April In Paris, Pennsylvania 6-500, and Sing, Sing, Sing.

And the surf sounds of the ‘60s will be remembered with a version of the Beach Boys “Surfin’ USA.” John Williams’ Midway March will also be on the program. This march was composed in 1976 for the epic movie Midway, but more a successful re-edit of the extended version aired on the CBS network commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Midway.

And don’t miss The Typewriter, a short concerto composed especially for the old manual typewriter and symphony orchestra! This short symphony features our very own Lisa Austin on the keys. Leroy Anderson’s 1950 ‘typewriter concerto’ is a masterpiece of musical comedy according to Classic FM.

Robert Martinez will be conducting and has been leading the Desert Community Orchestra since 1994. “This year we want to present music that has a theme to bring us together,” states Martinez. “What better way to do this than to join together for two patriotic sing alongs!” Bring the entire family with a lawn chair and enjoy! No doubt there is a melody that we’ll play that will evoke love for the good ol’ USA. You’ll be proud to be an American at this event!”

The concert is free but donations are greatly appreciated.  Donations help cover many of the operating expenses associated with the orchestra. The DCO greatly appreciates Desert Valleys Federal Credit Union’ s generous sponsorship of this special community event.
