Roland John Veon Jr.

Roland John Veon Jr.Born: July 22, 1933 in Bakersfield, CA

Died: February 11, 2021 at Ridgecrest Regional Hospital from natural causes.

He grew up in Bakersfield, CA; enlisted for 4 years in the US Air Force and returned to California where he earned his BS in Mathematics from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

In 1960 he married Melba Faye Hensley and they moved to China Lake, CA. He worked for the Department of Defense at China Lake Naval Weapons Center as a Civilian employee until he retired in 1988.

He started his coaching career at St. Ann Catholic School by coaching students for the Junior Olympics. He and Dan Johnson formed the Maturango Milers Track Club and they travelled throughout the US. While coaching the track club he also coached at Sherman E. Burroughs High School in Ridgecrest, CA. He was the head coach for Cross-Country and coached the distance runners for Track & Field (both girls and boys). He also coached Wrestling and helped with the Junior Varsity Girls Volleyball team and the Freshman Football team.

After retiring he started a youth Wrestling group and they traveled throughout the San Joaquin Valley.

He also volunteered at the Ridgecrest Animal Shelter and was the starter for the Special Olympics well into his seventies.

He is survived by his wife

of 60 years, Melba (Hensley) Veon of Ridgecrest; son, Travis Veon, and wife Ilka of Rancho Cucamonga; daughter, Francine (Veon) Rall of Ridgecrest; grandchildren, Linda Rall of Ponderay, ID; Gail Rall of St. Paul, MN; and Sean Rall and wife Amber and Great Grandson Otis of Lemore.

Services with honors will be held at Bakersfield National Cemetery on April 12, 2021.
