Neighbor takes action, knocks down fire

Neighbor takes action, knocks down fireMike Kinkennon quickly responded to a fire in his neighborhood in the 600 block of S. Norma St. at 9am on Wednesday. While driving to his home he saw billows of smoke rising from the evaporative cooler and immediately took action. After an unsuccessful attempt to kick in the door, a neighbor entered through a window in the rear of the house giving Kinkennon access. After a quick evaluation, he determined that the fire was being fueled by a gas leak. Grabbing a tool from his truck, he turned off the gas, extinguishing the flames with a garden hose. The Ridgecrest Police department soon arrived. Officer Bill Grove assisted Kinkennon in the operation. The Kern County Fire Department promptly arrived and secured the scene. — Photo by Laura Austin
