Outage triggered by city contractor

Outage triggered by city contractorA crew from Bowman Asphalt, contracted by the city for improvements on the corner of China Lake Boulevard and Dolphin Avenue, mistakenly cut a cable while excavating a new culvert at the site. The severed cable apparently triggered an outage for AT&T cellular customers. “Everything has since been repaired,” said Bard Lower, public works director for the city. He added that it is on the contractor to pay for repairs. The loss in service impacted emergency phone numbers for the Indian Wells Valley and Trona areas. Hundreds of students in the Sierra Sands Unified School District were also reportedly knocked offline by the loss of service, which impacted MiFi devices that enable student internet access. — Photo by Laura Austin
