Inyo County Sheriffs arrested an armed suspect, who was allegedly threatening travelers and law enforcement with a rifle on Highway 395 near Pearsonville, Calif. The suspect, 35-year-old Matthew David Hays, had been at large for several days until his arrest on Aug. 28.

According to reports, Hays pulled a rifle on a motorist who was changing a flat tire on the 395 just north of Pearsonville on Monday, Aug. 24.

Later that day, an investigation led Inyo County Sheriff’s deputies to Hays’ residence where the suspect emerged from his trailer with a rifle. Hays fled from the officers after allegedly refusing to drop the firearm while holding it in a “low and ready position.”

The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office and assisting agencies immediately began a search of the area but initially found only the suspect’s rifle and clothing in a nearby abandoned building.

On Friday, Aug. 28, authorities caught up with Hays in the 500 block of Sterling Road, just south of 9-mile Canyon. The suspect was arrested without further incident and booked in the Inyo County Jail.

Hays faces two charges of assault with a firearm as well as charges for resisting arrest and obstructing a public officer. No further details were provided by the ICSO at press time.
