School to begin Aug. 17Sierra Sands Unified School District Board of Education held a special meeting Thursday to amend its academic calendar to change the first day of school to Monday, Aug. 17.

According to district reports, the administration negotiated new contracts with the unions “to allow for additional days for professional development and preparation.”

A couple of weeks ago, Sierra Sands learned that Kern County is one of the counties in California that has been prohibited from opening in-person. While Indian Wells Valley infection rates remain within the state’s guidelines for an on-campus return, spiking outbreaks in West Kern have landed all county schools on the “monitoring” list.

According to SSUSD Superintendent Dr. David Ostash, factoring in the training at the beginning of the year will help prepare teachers for the second iteration of distance learning. Training modules for parents will be announced, soon.

In order to allow for the additional days of professional development at the beginning of the school year, Oct. 30, Nov. 23 and 24 and Feb. 5 will now become instructional days.

“The end date for the 2020-21 school year will remain the same, thereby providing students with 180 instructional days,” states an SSUSD report.
