After a one-week delay, Ridgecrest’s Grocery Outlet officially opened its doors to the public on Thursday, July 23. The bargain market is a place where shoppers can find overstocked, discounted grocery goods of all kinds.

“Our groceries cost 50-to-70 percent less than ‘normal prices’ from other stores,” said Kristina Mahr, who co-owns the store with her fiancé Adam Cross. “Our bargain market carries the same products Target and Walmart carry, but we only buy wholesale so we have a constantly rotating selection to make sure we’re offering the best bargains on the products available. And of course we always have staples like milk, eggs and bread.”

Mahr added that Grocery Outlet is open to reselling local products like eggs and produce from local farms – especially if producers are willing to expand their availability to other locations such as Lake Isabella.

Grocery Outlet also advertises its “NOSH” (natural, organic, specialty, healthy) products. “On average, each store offers more than 500 items to choose from,” said Mahr.

The couple, from Atascadero in San Luis Obispo County, have been with the company for six years when they received the opportunity to open their own store.

“We were looking for locations to settle and liked the idea of living in Ridgecrest. We’re from a small town ourselves, so we didn’t really want to move into a big city,” said Mahr. “We wanted somewhere with a tight-knit, family feel where we could dig into the community and create a positive impact.”

While there have been some hang ups regarding the delayed opening, Mahr looks forward to partnering with other local organizations and investing in the community – such as donating products to the Salvation Army and Women’s Center High Desert as part of the Independence from Hunger campaign running through July 31.

The new store is located at 120 N. China Lake Boulevard in the Ridgecrest Plaza Shopping Center and is open every day, 8 a.m.-9 p.m. For more information, find @RidgecrestGroceryOutlet on Facebook or call the store at (760) 371-7731.
