Gregory (Greg) Allan Ernst

Gregory (Greg) Allan ErnstGreg was born Sept. 29, 1947, in Salem, Ore., the fifth of eight children born to Paul and Bertilla Ernst.

Greg moved to Ridgecrest in 1975 where he fell in love with the desert, mountains and surrounding area and enjoyed learning about local history.

Greg passed away at home on June 12, 2020, from complications caused by Lewy Body Dementia.

Greg is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susie; son, Joseph of Ridgecrest; step sons, Stephen Smith of Inyokern, Stacy/Debbie Smith of Ridgecrest; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two sisters; and five brothers.

He is preceded in death by his parents and stepson Scott Smith.

Greg was a graduate of Oregon State University and San Jose State University.

Greg was employed as a teacher at Sierra Sands Unified School District teaching at both Burroughs High School and Mesquite High School until his retirement in 2004. Greg was an adjunct instructor at Cerro Coso College for many years and enjoyed teaching weight lifting as well as other fitness courses.

Greg was an avid sports enthuthiast throughout his life and was on the All-Star Wrestling Olympic team while in high school and Football Player of the Year while at Oregon State University. Greg also spent many years in the valley as youth league coach in basketball, soccer and football.

Greg loved working outdoors gardening and building things, traveling to many destinations throughout the world with his wife, Susie and spending time with his family.
