RMES hosts virtual sing-off

RMES hosts virtual sing-offRIDGECREST MUSICAL ENRICHMENT SOCIETY — Calling all singers! Due to social distancing and stay-at-home orders, the Ridgecrest Musical Enrichment Society is unable to provide any of its normal community musical productions this year. But RMES doesn’t want to let that stop our local performers from displaying their talent.

RMES invites the community to participate in #RMES2020SingOff, an online vocal talent contest for performers 8 and older. Area residents can post a video on Facebook of them singing a musical theater number and be eligible to win gift certificates to local businesses.

“I was trying to think outside the box on how to fill the void from all the performances that have been cancelled this year,” said RMES Boardmember Ryan Loewen. “This idea just popped into my head as a solution for those longing to perform.”

Videos should should be 2-3 minutes long and feature a family-friendly musical theater number using live or karaoke accompaniment. Make sure to include the #RMES2020SingOff hashtag, and that posts are set to “public,” so the featured judges can easily find your video.

Prizes will go to winners in two categories: ages 8-14 and ages 15 and up — but aspiring broadway performers of any age are encouraged to post.

Judging the submissions will be current and former RMES performers Ala Tiatia, Sharon Nicole and Larry Cosner III.

Cosner, a local family man and base engineer, is a founding RMES members who has starred in local productions of “Beauty and the Beast,” “Secret Garden” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

Nicole and Tiatia have since taken their skills beyond Ridgecrest. Tiatia has performed at Disney and with Moonlight Stage Productions and recently was a performer in the national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Evita.” Nicole’s credits include performing in NBC’s “The Voice” and ABC’s “American Idol” in addition to an upcoming Disney television project.
