Star Gazing

China Lake Astronomical Society has canceled its May 4 meeting, as well as all other star parties, until further notice.

MAY CELESTIAL CALENDAR:

1. Venus will shine brightly in the west-northwest evening this month.

2. Mercury moves to the evening sky where it joins Venus in the west-northwest the last half of the month. There will be a close conjunction of the two on May 21.

3. Jupiter, Mars and Saturn all remain in the morning sky. Jupiter rises about 2 a.m. Saturn rises soon after and Mars rises a couple of hours before the sun. All in the southeast.

4. The Eta Aquariid meteor shower peaks on the morning of May 5 but is hampered by the nearly full moon.
