Audubon & Tortoise Club to hold joint meeting

Kerncrest Audubon and the Ridgecrest Chapter of the California Turtle and Tortoise Club will present Dr. Brittany Slabach of the Desert Tortoise Preserve Committee at a Thursday, March 19, meeting at 7 p.m. at the Maturango Museum.

She will discuss the DTPC’s land acquisitions and restoration activities including some pilot research conducted in December (analysis is ongoing). She will present a brief introduction and history of the DTPC to familiarize everyone with the organization.

Slabach is a broadly trained vertebrate ecologist whose work is centered on social behavior, population ecology and conservation. She received her master’s in biology and a PhD in biology from Tufts University.

She has also investigated questions of bird and small mammal populations and disease ecology.

She joined the Desert Tortoise Preserve Committee as the preserve manager and vonservation coordinator in July 2019. On that committee she has focused on increasing research and outreach efforts of the organization.

She is also an adjunct professor of biology at Harvey Mudd College, where she is teaching ecology this spring.
