AIAA presents amateur rocketry program March 25

The China Lake Section of AIAA will present “How You Too Can Become a Real Rocket Scientist” by aerospace engineer Jim Gross on Wednesday, March 25, from 7-8 p.m. in the Maturango Museum.

Gross became interested in amateur rocketry and began performing his own experiments around age 13. This ultimately led him to obtain a degree in aerospace engineering from Northrup University in 1970.

After serving in the U.S. Army Artillery at Fort Sill, Jim began his career at Tinker AFB and resumed his rocket hobby, utilizing a couple of “test sites” he developed on remote Oklahoma farms.

Desiring more involvement in rocket technology, Jim moved to the Air Force Rocket Propulsion Lab at Edwards AFB before joining the China Lake Propulsion Development Department in 1985.

The program is open to the public, and admission is free.
