Kern County firefighters responded to a fire earlier this week in the 600 block of Atkins Avenue with reports of a person still inside the burning structure.

According to a press release, KCFD received the call at approximately 9:47 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Upon firefighters’ arrival, the burning residence was 80 percent involved with the fire with potential to spread the flames to another structure.

Firefighters found the unaccounted person, as well as another victim, being cared for by officers of the Ridgecrest Police Department and Liberty Ambulance paramedics. After confirming that no others remained inside the structure, firefighters worked around downed power lines to quench the flames.

Both victims reportedly sustained injuries and were transported to Ridgecrest Regional Hospital. Firefighters remained on the scene to salvage property for the home’s owner.
