The sun bursts out in March and folks can hardly wait to leap forth with it, seeking every playful possibility from escape rooms to festivals as you will find in this monthly round-up of short hops and longer trips in the Golden State.

To the northwest in San Francisco, the recently opened Escape Game goes beyond typical lock-and key fare. Five family-friendly immersive adventures engage all five senses and encourage teamwork (theescapegame.com/sanfrancisco/; 415-940-7808).

Down below in the California Science Center, Exposition Park, LA, don’t let the title throw you with “Art of the Brick” that just opened February 28. The world’s largest display of LEGO® art features over one million LEGO® blocks transformed into more than 100 sculptures by artist Nathan Sawaya. The collection reimagines such masterpieces as Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” and Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” (californiasciencecentr.org; 323-724-3623).

Also in Exposition Park, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles revels in “The Natural History of Horror: The Science of Scary” through Sunday, April 19. Rare movie props, film footage, hands-on activities, and museum specimens explore the scientific inspiration behind renowned cinema monsters (free with paid museum admission; nhm.org; 213-763-3466).

From Friday, March 27 through Sunday, April 12, the Discovery Cube Orange County in Santa Ana throws a Bubblefest that includes the Mega Bubblefest Laser Show and bubble carousel (discoverycube.org; 714-542-2823).

Farther down along the coast, the San Diego Cake Show, Saturday-Sunday, March 21-22, circumnavigates “Around the World in 80 Cakes” through taste sensations, competitions, and how-to tips (sandiegocakeshow.com; 858-333-6905).

Free in Palm Desert on Saturday, March 28 until 3:00 p.m., Scandinavian Heritage Day combines genealogy, folk arts and crafts from embroidery to wood carving, Viking lore, and traditional food at Hope Lutheran Church (sofn.com.760-343-0848); Agua Caliente Casino presents Palm Desert Food & Wine at the Gardens of El Paseo, Friday-Sunday, March 27-29, celebrating 10 years of premier chefs, restaurants, and wine (palmdesertfoodandwine.com; 800-210-0689).
