Youngblood addresses local youth

Youngblood addresses local youthKern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood speaks to students at Burroughs High School on Tuesday. While he spoke about the importance of pursuing education, he also discussed opportunities, particularly in law enforcement, for people with only high school diplomas. Youngblood said that he “barely finished” high school and didn’t obtain a degree until much later in his career. But he didn’t let that stand in the way of his success. “If I could do it, so can you,” he said. “He really delivered a positive message to the kids,” said Rick Smith. “He was very inspirational and I think he really related to the students.” Smith, who teaches criminal justice at BHS as part of the Career Technical Education program, is a former detective with the Ridgecrest Police Department. — Photo by Laura Austin
