Dozens of students attend Scholastic Chess TournamentSome 50 students compete in the Scholastic Chess Tournament held on Martin Luther King Day at Gateway Elementary School. Gateway Kindergartener Ethan Hernandez was the top player for the K-1 section. Other section winners were Las Flores third-grader Logan Merriman (2-3), Pierce fourth-grader Aiden Goodarzira (4-5), Murray eighth-grader Amanda Huynh (6-8) and Burroughs senior Halle Wong (9-12). According to Tournament Director Dwight Morgan, Las Flores was the top performer among elementary schools; Murray was the top-performing middle school; and Burroughs was the top-performing high school. The next tournament will be held President’s Day Weekend on Monday, Feb. 17, at Gateway Elementary School. Registration opens at 8:15 a.m., with tournament play beginning at 9 a.m. Winners will be announced after five rounds of play, around noon. — Courtesy photo
