New veterans book showcased

The Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert will discuss “Scenes From Lives of Service: High Desert Veterans of WWI Through Desert Storm,” a new book about local veterans, at its Tuesday, Feb. 18, meeting at 7 p.m. in the Historic USO Building.

John Anderson will give the program.

According to a spokes-person, Mayor Peggy Breeden suggested the idea of sharing stories of local military veterans to the Ridge Writers, the local chapter of the California Writers Club. The collection includes 120 stories that range in tone from terrifying to uplifting to humorous.

Anderson will present a few stories and photos — the subjects of which many may recognize as their neighbors “and perhaps learn something they didn’t know about the past lives of their friends and acquaintances.”

Liz Babcock played a key role in collecting, writing and editing many of the stories, as well as in designing the final product.

The book will be available for sale at the meeting, and is also on sale at the HSUMD gift shop.

Anderson, a Korean War veteran, is a member of the governing board of Ridge Writers.

HSUMD meets the third Tuesday of most months. Meetings are free and open to the public. For more information call 760-375-8456.
