Service academy forum set

House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy will host a forum in Bakersfield Saturday, Feb. 8, for students in his district who are interested in attending a U.S. Service Academy.

“Our nation’s service academies offer young scholars some of the best educational opportunities in the country, while also equipping them with invaluable leadership skills,” said McCarthy.

“Each year students from our congressional district make our community proud when they apply and earn a coveted spot at one of these prestigious institutions. For any student who is interested in learning more about life within the various branches of the military, I encourage you to attend our forum.”

McCarthy and service academy liaison officers will give presentations about the congressional nomination process.

Liaisons will represent the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy offers appointments solely on the basis of a nationwide merit-based competition, and a congressional nomination is not required.

The forum will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Kern County Board of Supervisors’ Chambers, 1115 Truxtun Ave.
