Former Encino-based physician Dr. Kain Kumar was sentenced to two years in federal prison earlier this month after pleading guilty to fraudulently billing Medicare for services not rendered, according to the U.S. District Court Central District of California.

Kumar operated a local office before his arrest in 2016 and was one of five physicians arrested for accepting financial kickbacks in exchange for referrals to Star Home Health Resources. The chief operating officer of Star Home Health was also arrested.

In addition to a 24-month sentence, Kumar, 56, is expected to pay fines in excess of $1 million and serve three years of supervised release following his custody.
