CLAS to honor Earl Wilson

Star Gazing

The China Lake Astronomical Society will hold its next meeting on Monday, Jan. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Maturango Museum. We will have a remembrance of Earl Wilson, who passed away recently. We will also have elections of officers and discuss recent astronomical events.

No more star parties are scheduled until March.

1. Venus will shine brightly in the southwest evening sky this month.

2. Mars remains in the morning sky this month. Look for it in the east about three hours before the sun rises.

3. Mercury moves to the evening sky this month but will only be visible very low in the southwest the last few days of the month.

4. Jupiter and Saturn are too close to the sun to be easily visible this month.

5. The dim and short-lived Quadrantid meteor shower peaks on the night of the Jan. 3 and 4.
