’Giving — one of our favorite Christmas traditions’

’Giving — one of our favorite Christmas traditions’A Marine marches in the Elks Children’s Christmas Parade toward the end of its annual Toys for Tots drive. According to Jan Bennett, who was among the many volunteers in the effort, the program was able to serve more than 900 children from the Ridgecrest area, plus about 250 from Inyokern, Trona, Johannesburg, Randsburg and California City. “We were able to give two or three presents to each child, depending on the age group. And then there were some stocking stuffers as well,” said Bennett. The drive solicited some 4,200 donations and another $6,500 in cash. “We are very grateful to everyone who supports the effort,” said Bennett. Any toys left will be donated to the Women’s Center-High Desert, the Salvation Army and the Ridgecrest Police Department, who also cater to local children during the holidays. — Photo by Laura Austin
