Student speaker contest

The Ridgecrest Lions Club will once again host its student speaker contest for grades 9-12, on the theme “Homelessness in California: What is the Solution?”

Students will present their speeches on Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. Winners from the local contest will advance to the next round of competition. More than $100,000 in scholarships will be awarded to the winners in California, the overall champion earning $21,000 in scholarship funds.

The contest is limited to six students. If more than six apply, an essay contest may be necessary to reduce the pool of candidates. The deadline for application is Dec. 15.

A student speakers handbook is available for download under “public handbook” at
