Deadline nears for food basketsFamilies and individuals seeking assistance from the Salvation Army’s Holiday Food Basket program have until next Thursday to complete the application process.

Each holiday season, the Salvation Army leads a drive to package up Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for local families in need.

Historically, families are adopted by those who make personal deliveries. Other donors contribute food or money so that Salvation Army staff and volunteers can put together special dinners for applicants.

However, this year, Major Evadne Wright said she believes the earthquakes could have a big impact on the need in the community.

For some, the unexpected expenses of recovery could increase the number of applicants seeking help during the holidays.

But Wright said it’s also possible that the abundance of giving that happened right after the earthquakes could mean fewer donors this season.

“This is a very generous community,” she said. “A lot of people who contribute to the holiday food basket program every year may not be in a position to, because they gave so much during the earthquakes.”

Anyone available to help replenish the Salvation Army’s food pantry, donate the fixings for a Thanksgiving dinner, sponsor a package or adopt a family or individual this year is encouraged to call 760-375-7219.

Those seeking assistance have until Nov. 14 to submit applications for Thanksgiving food baskets.

Applicants must include proof of income for everyone in the household and proof of address.

Applications can be filled out only at the Salvation Army, located at 151 N. Downs St.
