Relay teams to meet Sept. 10

Relay teams to meet Sept. 10The Ridgecrest Relay for Life is hosting a “survivors’ social” and informational meeting Sept. 10 at Starbucks and is inviting anyone and everyone interested in combating cancer to “be there or be square.”

The event begins at 6 p.m. and attendees are encouraged to RSVP to 760-793-3866 by Sept. 6. Starbucks will provide coffee, iced tea and treats.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life has operated locally for more than 20 years and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars toward cancer research and supporting cancer patients.

The 24-hour event begins Oct. 5, 9 a.m., at the Cerro Coso Community College track. And this year it’s “Back to the ’80s!” Attendees are encouraged to tease their hair and dust off their Walkmen for a totally radical fight against cancer.

Every penny donated from the community counts toward the cause of eradicating cancer said ACS Community Development Manager Jamie Brickey Powell. “It takes things like our 24/7 help line and free rides to chemo,” she said. “Most of all, it takes you.”
