NARFE to address preparedness

NARFE to address preparednessThe Wednesday, Sept. 11, meeting of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association will focus on disaster preparedness. The meeting will be held at 2 p.m. (preceded by a social gathering at 1:30 p.m.) in Coso Conference Rooms on the east side of the Kerr McGee Center.

“Suppose you get a notice saying you must evacuate your home within 30 minutes,” asked a NARFE spokesperson. “What do you take with you, realizing you may not see your home again for days — or ever?”

The program will outline what items should be in your “go bag” for emergencies.

Brenda Dawson, program manager for Community Emergency Response Team will go over the mission of CERT, a group of dedicated and highly trained volunteers who work with police, firefighters and other emergency personnel.

“You may not have seen the CERT shirts in the aftermath of the earthquakes, but they were everywhere behind the scenes,” said the spokesperson.

“We will also learn about how CERT volunteers and teams operate, smoothing the way for professional first responders when they arrive, and assisting victims before they arrive.”

Dawson will also present information handouts, including a “24-Week Family Disaster Supply Calendar.”
