Suspect in shooting death at largeOfficers of the Ridgecrest Police Department are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect in an early morning shooting Thursday that left a 19-year-old Ridgecrest man dead.

Sgt. Dan Armogida of RPD posted a video on Facebook, announcing the shooting, the active crime scene and the investigation.

“RPD is offering a $1,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of the suspect,” he said. “We don’t have any information at this time indicating there is any danger to the public, but we are asking for your help.”

According to RPD Chief Jed McLaughlin, officers were dispatched to investigate a report of shots fired near the 400 block of North Gold Canyon shortly after midnight. Upon arrival they discovered the subject of an apparent shooting.

The victim was transported to Ridgecrest Regional Hospital, and later to Kern Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Pending the notification of next of kin, the name of the victim is being withheld.

“The investigation continues, and at this time we do not have a suspect,” said McLaughlin.

The chief notified officials of Sierra Sands Unified School District of the incident, because Pierce Elementary School is located a few hundred yards from the shooting.

“We have determined that there is no public risk, no need for a lockdown,” said McLaughlin. “But we have an officer staged at Pierce as a precaution.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call RPD at 760-499-5100. Details will be reported as they become available.
