Perseid shower is next monthBy ROGER BROWER

The China Lake Astronomical Society will host its monthly program Monday, Aug. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Maturango Museum. The next star party will be held Friday, Aug. 2, with signs out at 8:30 p.m. and viewing at 9 p.m.

AUGUST CELESTIAL CALENDAR

1. Jupiter is in Scorpius near the red star Antares all month. Look for it in the south as night falls.

2. Venus and Mars are both too close to the sun to be easily viewed all month.

3. Saturn, just past its July opposition, is visible in the southeast after sunset and moves across the southern sky as the night progresses.

4. Mercury moves to the morning sky this month and puts on a good display by midmonth. Look for it in the east-northeast before the sun rises.

5. The big event of the month is of course the Perseid meteor shower which peaks on Aug. 13. This year it will be largely washed out by the full moon.
