Library kicks off summer readingBy CHARISSA WAGNER

This summer, “It’s Showtime at Your Library!” brings the performance world to you with a variety of events for all ages to attend in June and July at the Ridgecrest Branch Library. In fact, there will be at least one event every day the library is open, along with a variety of events that will always be available. Kick off “It’s Showtime at Your Library!” on Saturday, June 1, at 12:15 p.m. with an introduction to the Summer Reading Challenge, Story Time with Erin Zobell, Yo-yo and Spin Top demonstration by Jose Madrigal and a singalong with the Folk Band Caliches of County Kern. Beat the lines and preregister for an individual or family account now with the Beanstack software by going to kclsummerchallenge.org which has more information and the link to sign up.

The first major event is the Beth Armogida Planetarium, hosted by the Maturango Museum docents on Wednesday, June 5, at 3 p.m., with the last show starting at 6 p.m. Space in the planetarium is limited, so tickets are required. Sign up for a showtime by calling the library, emailing ridgecrestbranchlibrary@gmail.com or messaging the library’s Facebook page with the showtime (every 30 minutes from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.). Unclaimed tickets for each showtime will be released to the general public a few minutes before the show starts.

The Summer Reading Challenge includes finisher and bonus finisher incentives for all age categories. All reading and listening counts — graphic novels/manga, print books, ebooks and audiobooks. Early Learners (babies through 4-year-olds) can be read to. The finale drawings on July 31 will be for a $20 gift card to Ridgecrest Cinemas for each age category with a grand prize drawing of a $50 gift card to Ridgecrest Cinemas.

Returning again is Lunch at the Library, which starts on Tuesday, June 4, and serves lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays through Fridays to all ages 18 and younger at no cost, with caregiver meals for $2 each. There will be indoor and outdoor activities each day of Lunch at the Library. Volunteers for Lunch at the Library, Roaming Readers (reading stories during Lunch at the Library) or other Summer Reading Challenge activities are still being accepted.
