Auditions for ‘Newsies’ coming up

Auditions for ‘Newsies’ coming upRidgecrest Musical Enrichment Society will hold open auditions for its local production of the Tony-award-winning Broadway hit “Newsies: The Broadway Musical” in June.

In 2009 RMES began using local talent to stage high-quality shows for local audiences — in the process raising money for performing arts education in the community.

“As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, ‘Newsies’ will be our most ambitious production to date, with an unprecedented number of roles available for young people,” said RMES President Kevin Anderson.

“Newsies” is based on the 1992 Disney motion picture of the same name, a retelling of the 1899 newsboys’ strike against New York City publishing giants.

“Although the majority of the characters in this story are young men, we are hoping to cast the show based on the abundant talent in our community — which includes any interested young ladies — and not necessarily a strict adherence to historical accuracy,” said Anderson.

Anyone interested in trying out is encouraged to find additional details (including the required forms) at auditions.

Auditions for ages 17 and older will be held Wednesday, June 19, from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Cerro Coso Community College Lecture Center.

Children ages 9-16 will try out Thursday, June 20, from 2-6 p.m. in the CCCC Lecture Center.

The second round of adult auditions (as well as some callbacks for child performers) will be held Friday, June 21, starting at 6:30 p.m.

This round will include continued vocal auditions, as well as dance auditions and cold readings.

Adult callbacks will be held Saturday, June 22, starting at 6:30 p.m.

A complete schedule of rehearsals and performances — which will run from late June through early October — will be available for review during auditions.

“Because of the time commitment involved, we are hoping to get the word out for auditions as soon as possible,” said Director Bill Farris.

Anyone who is interested in trying out, but is not available during open auditions, must contact Jake Gabrillo at jakegabrillo@yahoo. com by June 1 to make arrangements with the production team.

The cast list will be posted by Monday, June 24, at 6 p.m. on the door of the News Review (109 N. Sanders St.)
