To the Editor: Watch for new taxes

More taxes will be on the ballot this fall under a sneaky misleading title. The initiative, titled “California Schools and Local Communities Funding Act” would split the state’s property tax roll into residential and commercial, revoking the protection of Prop 13 from business properties.

This would affect every business in California. Proponents of the bill estimate it would pull in $10 billion in annual revenue. And guess what? Those tax increases on businesses would immediately be passed on to customers.

Opponents of the measure predict it would be an economic disaster to raise taxes on every business in California, and further, would likely be only one step in the campaign to eventually destroy Prop 13 altogether. If that happens property taxes will shoot sky high. So — beware of this measure when you vote.
