NAWCWD’s Melvin Sorem recognized for safety

NAWCWD’s Melvin Sorem recognized for safetyCapt. Matthew Sniffin, vice commander of Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, presents Melvin Sorem with a safety award in recognition of his performance as the rigger-in-charge of a Category II 30,000-pound bridge crane at China Lake on March 14. During a Feb. 27 Navy Crane Center evaluation, Sorem took the appropriate steps to cancel a lift that required an additional lift plan and briefing. Jeremy Varner, crane evaluator, was impressed with Sorem’s action to discontinue the scheduled lift because of concerns about safetyto the lifting team and possible material damage. His actions were considered to be “in keeping with the motto of ‘safety first’ and an excellent example for others at NAWCWD to follow.” — U.S. Navy photo by Paul Kakert
