A former Ridgecrest resident was arrested in Rancho Cucamonga last month for failing to register as a sex offender when he established a new residence.

The suspect, 38-year-old Jonathan Edward Byrd, was convicted of sexual acts with a child under the age of 14 in 2007 according to a release from the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department.

Byrd last registered in May 2018, according to the release, but investigators learned that he had taken residence somewhere near Rancho Cucamonga or Upland in San Bernardino County in early 2019.

Rancho Cucamonga detectives conducted an investigation in which they learned he was living in the 600 Block of Elm Way in Upland and never registered with local law enforcement.

According to the release, Byrd was “purposely trying to conceal his residency so law enforcement would not know where he was living.” More details weren’t available at press time as the matter is still under investigation.

Detectives located Byrd in Rancho Cucamonga on March 19 where he was placed under arrest. After serving a search warrant of his suspected residence, detectives confirmed that Byrd was living and working in the Upland area.

He is being held at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga in lieu of $250,000 bail and is facing felony charges for failing to register as a sex offender at his regular address. He was arraigned on March 22 and has a pre-preliminary hearing scheduled for April 15 in Rancho Cucamonga.

The Ridgecrest Police Depart-ment also filed criminal charges against Byrd for failing to notify local law enforcement prior to moving. His hearing is scheduled for April 16, 10:30 a.m. in Ridgecrest.

Detectives encourage anyone who has been victimized by Byrd or who has further information regarding his case to contact the RCPD Detective Division at 909-477-2800 or anonymously at 800-78-CRIME.
