Getting ‘reel’ in March and beyond!

In the Audience

By NICK ROGERS

Last year’s Classic Movie Night series, “Reel People,” was so well-received, we have decided that a “Part 2” is a must! So, our next series, “Reel People: Part 2” will screen six recently produced bio-pics at the Historic USO Building starting on March 20 and running through May — right up to our seventh annual “Summer of Movie Magic.”

Gosh, does time fly!

Our first film stars famed British actress, Helen Mirren, who nabbed a Best Actress Academy Award for her astounding performance as Queen Elizabeth II in 2006. The film depicts the British royal family’s response to the death of Diana, Princess of Wales (lovingly dubbed, “The People’s Princess”) in Paris on Aug. 31, 1997. Her tragic traffic-accident death with her boyfriend, Harrod’s department store playboy heir Dodi Fayed, unleashed a wave of public sentiment and controversy, as initially the Queen and Prince Philip (John Cromwell) regarded Diana’s death as a private affair and not as an official royal death.

However, newly elected Prime Minister Tony Blair (Michael Sheen) and Diana’s ex-husband, Prince Charles (Alex Jennings) favored the public’s desire for an official expression of grief. Blair, anticipating a negative public uproar of monumental size, decided to persuade Queen Elizabeth to pay tribute to the beloved dead princess. Told entirely in tight, short dramatic scenes of personal conflict, the film gives the audience a fascinatingly eerie sense of what privately goes on in the British monarchy.

Five more compelling true stories (well, Hollywood-style, that is …) await movie-loving audiences in April and May. Be sure to stop by the Historic USO Building for a current film schedule.

Films screen on flex Wednesdays at 7 p.m. The sensational Snack Bar offers taste-tempting treats at very thrifty prices beginning at 6:30 p.m. Admission to our “royal” patrons is always, free, but donations are warmly received as we continue the maintenance of our movie “palace.”

See you at the movies … for “reel” entertainment!
