Friends, family and the community are mustering support for the Gregory family after the unexpected loss of their nine-year-old son Kaden Gregory.

According to reports, the family originally took Kaden to the hospital for symptoms of the flu. On January 1, he died at Children’s Hospital of Orange County after being transported for his critical condition.

A Celebration of Life for Kaden is this Saturday, Jan. 12, 11 a.m. at the Immanuel Christian School Chapel, 201 W. Graaf, with a reception to follow at Immanuel Ministry Center, 1201 N. China Lake Blvd.

The family announced on social media that Kaden’s diagnosis was severe diabetic ketoacidosis from undiagnosed Type-1 diabetes.

“It was unknown to us at the time,’ said Kaden’s mother Janelle. “The doctors told us that diabetic symptoms are very similar to the stomach flu. Kaden passed from the complications of that. Thanks for your prayers and thoughts.”

DKA is considered to be the most common presentation of diabetes in children and adolescents, and treatment depends on an early diagnosis according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information.

The family has a GoFundMe page (gofundme.com/gregory-family) to help offset medical costs and funeral expenses. Additional funds will be contributed to diabetes research.
