Strong weekend winds exceed 60 mph

Strong weekend winds exceed 60 mphKnocked down by powerful winds early Monday morning is a utility pole on Highway 14, just north of Inyokern Road. According to China Lake Weather Office measurements, gusts peaked around 60 miles per hour near midnight late Sunday-early Monday. Private weather station (not certified by NOAA standards) readings recorded winds into the 70-mph range. According to China Lake Weather Officer Tamera Walters, the station record was 80 mph in 1991. This weekend’s windstorm was also partly responsible for blowing over a big rig near the intersection of Highways 178 and 14. The accident temporarily closed part of the highway, but no injuries were reported. Other local damage reported during the storm impacted roofs, trees and structures. — Photo by Laura Austin
