Rock art researcher to address HSUMD

The Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert will host rock-art researcher David Lee on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Historic USO Building.

His program, “Ancient Images of the Owens Valley: 20 years of Documentation and Research,” will highlight Native American rock art, along with Lee’s research on its history and meaning.

Lee is an independent researcher who has documented hundreds of rock art sites in North America and northern Australia. He has been working with Senior Wardaman Elder Yidumduma Bill Harney since 2005 in a project to document Wardaman rock art sites and associated traditional knowledge.

Lee has published numerous books and papers including “Rock Art East of the Range of Light” and “Learning to Listen: A Personal Journey to the Land of the Lightning People.”

The meeting is open to the public, and admission is free. For more information on this or future meetings, call HSUMD at 760-375-8456.
