More China Lake anniversary events

The celebration of the 75th anniversary of China Lake, first established on Nov. 8, 1943, will be held throughout the corresponding weekend

On Thursday, Nov. 8, “The China Lake Experience” will be held from 4-7 p.m. at Mirror Lake. The event includes refreshments, activities and historical exhibits. Attendees must have base access.

The China Lake Retiree Affairs Office has scheduled retirees’ annual Appreciation Day event to coincide with the anniversary. Retirees will meet Friday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m. at the McLean Center on base. Howard McCauley will host the presentations. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. Call 760-939-0978 for details.

The China Lake Museum will offer free admission on Friday and Saturday, as well as guided tours of the base for $10 per person. The museum has also been sponsoring panels and presentations featuring highlights of China Lake achievement. From 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 a.m., food trucks will be on hand for members and guests at the China Lake Museum.

The Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert, another collaborator in the anniversary celebration, will be hosting an Open Mic Night Friday, starting at 7 p.m. in the Historic USO Building. Musicians are invited to perform, and music lovers are invited to enjoy the local and visiting talent. For information call 760-375-8456.

The Maturango Museum, whose historical and natural history displays maintain close ties with the ranges and work of China Lake, will be open each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum will waive admission on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 10 and 11, in honor of the anniversary celebration. On Saturday, “Dr. Bob” will be hosting STEM demonstrations at the China Lake Museum from noon to 3 p.m.

Events will culminate on Saturday, Nov. 10, with a gala dinner at 5 p.m. at the Kerr McGee Center. Adm. Michael Moran, former commander of NAWCWD, will speak on “History and Future of China Lake.”
