Bell announces retirementAlthough the Sierra Sands Unified School District Board of Trustees had not yet met when the News Review went to press, one of the discussion items on the agenda was a “letter of resignation” from Superintendent Ernie Bell.

“Submitting this letter is just the formal way of announcing my retirement,” Bell told the News Review earlier this week.

“I don’t believe they will discuss the succession at the meeting. This is just a way to officially acknowledge my retirement. They can discuss at a future meeting how they want to move forward with finding my replacement, which is why I am announcing it early.”

Bell himself is a 1977 graduate of Burroughs High School, where he returned after college to teach and later serve as principal.

“During my 35-year history with SSUSD, I have served as a teacher, school administrator and now superintendent, and I have always experienced an extraordinary level of support for our schools,” he said.

“This support has been especially meaningful to me since I am a native of this community, a product of this school system and I am very proud of the things we have been able to accomplish together.”

Bell said he has no plans to move out of the area. “I am looking forward to spending more time with my family and even finding new things to do, but I am not going anywhere.”
