Joan L. Chapman

Joan L. ChapmanJoan Lena (Vriesema) Chapman, 81, passed away peacefully at home in Ridgecrest, Sept. 15, 2018, after a short illness with congestive heart failure.

There will be a memorial service Saturday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m. at The Lighthouse, 111 N. Balsam St., Ridgecrest. At a later date Joan will be laid to rest in Russellville, Ky.

Joan was born in Hackensack, N.J., on July 27, 1937, to John (Jack) and Marie (VanOstenbridge) Vriesema. Joan was the youngest of seven children. Her life started in New Jersey where she grew up, married and had her two children. In the early 1980s, she moved to Kentucky to live near her son and family. There she worked as a home healthcare provider for family and friends.

Then, in the early 1990s, Joan moved to Nevada to live near her daughter and family; she ended up in California in 2000, again to be close to her daughter. She retired in March 2013 from the China Lake Naval Weapons Station after many years of employment as a food service worker and cook. She enjoyed working on the base and made friends with many people from all over.

Joan was most proud of her two children, William J. Chapman (Vickie) and Diane M. Ghilardi (Dino), who blessed her with a total of eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She very much enjoyed the last few years of her life in retirement, spending time with local friends…going to breakfasts and dinners, playing bingo and dominos. She has touched many hearts over the years and will be missed very much, but will forever be in our hearts. Joan is now at peace with her parents and siblings who have gone on before her.

In lieu of flowers a donation in her name to the American Heart Association (www.heart.org) would be a blessing.
