York joins Sierra Academy staff

York joins Sierra Academy staffSierra Academy of Dance recently introduced its newest instructor, Kristi York, who will teach lyrical contemporary dance.

York is a licensed physical therapy assistant, mother of two toddlers and former gymnast and coach with the Burroughs Cross-Country Team. After studying many styles of dance in college, York began lyrical contemporary.

“My whole point with this class is the joy of dance,” she said. “I decided to focus on teaching a lyrical class because I enjoyed the variety of styles and the focus on musicality that comes with this form of dance.”

Competitive gymnastics introduced York to the body awareness that led to her studying dance. When gymnastics was not available, York began her dance training at Sierra Academy of Dance while in high school.

San Diego Mesa College opened up the dance world to her, introducing her to many different styles of dance. She auditioned for and performed with with the college’s dance group. Hip hop, jazz, modern, and ballet performances filled her world and expanded her appreciation of and expertise in dance.

While studying physical therapy at Loma Linda University, York began to explore contemporary lyrical dance on her own time. This became the style that she embodies and shares with students.

“I feel that dance has helped my PT career because I am very aware of my own body and how things feel and I can understand where people are coming from.”

York said she loves teaching dance. “One beautiful thing why people are drawn to dance is because it gives them an outlet for so many different emotions.”

The class is held Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sierra Academy of Dance is located at 1008 Kyle Ct.
