Jeanette A. Christian

Jeanette A. ChristianJeanette A. Christian was born July 20, 1930, in St. Louis, Mo., to Henry and Anna (Schmid) Meyerpeter, and died Sept. 29, 2018.

Jeanette was the youngest of three daughters. Their mother passed away when Jeanette was 4 years old. Jeanette spent many happy days with her sisters, cousins and other relatives growing up in St. Louis. Jeanette attended Catholic grade school and high school and was always academically at the top of her class.

In 1948 Jeanette began working for the Department of Defense. In 1949 the lure of California weather led 18-year-old Jeanette, accompanied by her sister Dorothy, to accept a position with the Navy at China Lake. The bus dropped them off on a dirt road in Inyokern. Neither of them owned a car, so friendly locals provided rides to work and locations in Ridgecrest.

While working at China Lake, Jeanette attended a dance at Sandquist Spa. There, she met the love of her life, a young Marine, Lawrence Christian. By this time, Jeanette’s sister Dorothy had also met her future husband Daniel, and the two couples spent many days exploring the local desert, swimming at the Trona pool, dancing or having a picnic at Robber’s Roost. Jeanette and Larry were married Sept. 8, 1951, in a double wedding ceremony with Dorothy and Daniel at the base chapel.

Jeanette continued working at China Lake until her first daughter, Rebecca, was born in 1954, at which time she chose to become a stay-at-home mother. Jeanette and Larry welcomed three more children, Stephen, Ann, and Renee. Jeanette dedicated her life to her husband and raising her children.

Jeanette and Larry have been members of St. Ann Catholic Church for more than 60 years. Jeanette remained a devout Catholic throughout her life.

In September 2011, Jeanette and Larry, along with Dorothy and Daniel, celebrated a double 60th wedding anniversary at a celebration hosted by their children.

Jeanette is survived by her husband of 67 years, Lawrence and her daughters Rebecca (Frank) Baumann, Ann (John) Langan, Renee (Peter) Lesniak and son Stephen (Oy) Christian.  Jeanette is also survived by grandchildren Rachel Todd, Jennifer Littell, J.J. Baumann, Butch Baumann, Eladio (Donna) Serna, Matt (Anie) Serna, Ame Kaewkong, and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Dorothy Finochio, nephews Dale and David Finochio and niece Ruth (Ed) Perkins.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Ann Catholic Church on Saturday, Oct. 6, with a rosary at 9:45 a.m. and Mass immediately following. A reception will be held in the Msgr. Kevin Cleary Parish Hall after the service.
