Base anniversary events announced

The celebration of the 75th anniversary of China Lake, which was established on Nov. 8, 1943, will be held throughout that weekend.

The celebration begins Thursday, Nov. 8, at the China Lake Museum. Former China Lakers will gather at 3 p.m. to share stories, anecdotes and trivia related to their experiences at China Lake. Weather permitting, the event will be held on the patio on the east side of the museum.

That evening, “The China Lake Experience” celebration will be held from 4-7 p.m. at Mirror Lake. The event includes refreshments, activities and historical exhibits. Attendees must have base access.

The Retired Activities Office invites all China Lake retirees to its annual Appreciation Day event to coincide with the anniversary. Retirees and alumni are invited to meet Friday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m. at the McLean Center on base. Howard McCauley will host the presentations, with doors opening at 8:30 a.m. Call 760-939-0978 for details.

The China Lake Museum will offer free admission on Friday and Saturday, as well as guided tours of the base for $10 per person. The museum has also been sponsoring presentations featuring highlights of China Lake achievement.

The Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert, another collaborator in the anniversary celebration, will host an Open Mic Night Friday, starting at 7 p.m. in the Historic USO Building. For information call 760-375-8456.

The Maturango Museum, which began its existence at China Lake and which has numerous pertinent items in its collections, will be open each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum will waive admission fees on Saturday and Sunday in honor of the celebration.

Events will culminate on Saturday, Nov. 10, with a gala dinner at 5 p.m. at the Kerr McGee Center. Adm. Michael Moran will speak on “History and Future of China Lake.” The event will feature dinner, music and dancing. For information call 760-677-2866.
