Police apprehended a suspected car thief on Wednesday, Sept. 26.

According to a Ridgecrest Police Department press release, Sgt. Justin Dampier observed a suspicious vehicle while they were on patrol between Loewen’s and Ephen Tacos on South Gold Canyon Street.

The driver reportedly tried to evade Dampier by entering a dirt lot behind a nearby apartment complex but was successfully stopped.

After an investigation, officers suspect that the driver, Steven O’Reilly, 31, had stolen the pickup truck from the Loewen’s parking lot. O’Reilly, a convicted felon, was also in possession of ammunition and suspected methamphetamine.

O’Reilly was arrested and transported to the Central Receiving Facility in Bakersfield. Information on detailed charges and bail was not available at press time.
