As finisher numbers for the Ridgecrest Branch Library’s “Reading Takes You Everywhere!” Summer Reading Challenge have been finalized, we are excited to share that the Ridgecrest Branch Library had 308 child finishers, 77 tween/teen finishers, and 99 adult finishers!

A total of 5,146 books were read/listened to by children, tweens/teens read/listened to 1,354 hours and 1,245 books were read/listened to by adults. The Inyokern Elementary outreach location had 37 finishers (6 adults read/listened to 90 books, 7 tweens/teens read/listened to 130 hours and 24 children read/listened to 460 books).

It was a fun-filled summer with daily activities. Some event highlights: Tutu’s Shave Ice, Wild Child Adventures bubbles show, The Magic of Christopher Lopez, and Omnipresent Puppet Theater.

Some awesome Wednesday visitors: Infinite Movement Academy, Ridgecrest Police Department’s K-9 and Traffic Units and Kern County Fire Department.

New this summer was Lunch at the Library, a partnership with Sierra Sands Unified School District. We served lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays through Fridays from June through mid-July. We served 1,244 meals to children this summer or an average of 50 per day! We had a dedicated crew of regular volunteers and others who filled in to help, sometimes on short notice.

You were all appreciated!

Each finisher chose a book to keep. Amazingly generous local sponsors allowed each finisher to get a bag with coupons to local businesses, and we awarded 413 additional prizes! Every child who turned in a bonus finisher log got a prize.

Those reading more were eligible for other prizes. Every tween/teen and adult finisher got a prize with bonus finishers eligible for more prizes.

We want to thank these very generous sponsors for their donations: Friends of the Kern County Library, Inc. (finisher books, Omnipresent Puppet Theater, The Magic of Christopher Lopez), Friends of the Ridgecrest Branch Library (finisher bags, themed items, other prizes, Wild Child Adventures, Tutu’s Shave Ice), Pizza Factory, Jack in the Box, McDonald’s, Classic Burgers, Indian Wells Brewing Company, Ridgecrest Parks and Recreation Department, Infinite Movement Academy, Starbucks, Casey’s Steaks and BBQ, Casa Corona, Pita Fresh, Living Desert Wellness Center, Ephen Tacos, Ridgecrest Cinemas and the Mouw Family.

We truly appreciate the generosity of our local businesses that support keeping the brains in our community active over the summer!

We hope you join us next summer for Reading Takes You Everywhere.
